Prevent PDF Printing

Disable printing on your PDF while allowing all other actions — copying text, editing, and filling forms all remain permitted. This targeted protection is ideal when you want recipients to use the document digitally but not create physical copies. Common use cases include digital-only contracts, e-books distributed for on-screen reading, confidential slides shared during virtual meetings, training materials meant to stay within a learning management system, and subscription content that should not be reproduced on paper. The print restriction is enforced through PDF encryption, and compliant PDF readers like Adobe Acrobat will gray out the print option. Recipients can still view, search, copy text, and fill in forms. You set an owner password that controls these permissions — recipients never see or need this password. The document opens normally but the print function is blocked.

FAQ

Can someone still take screenshots instead of printing?
Yes. PDF print protection prevents the print function in PDF readers, but it cannot prevent screenshots, screen recording, or photographing the screen. For maximum protection against all forms of reproduction, combine print restriction with a visible watermark using the Watermark PDF tool.
Will this work in all PDF viewers?
The print restriction is enforced by PDF readers that follow the PDF encryption standard, including Adobe Acrobat, Foxit Reader, and most other commercial PDF software. Some open-source viewers may not enforce permissions. For the broadest protection, use AES encryption which is respected by all major PDF applications.
Can recipients still copy text from the document?
Yes. This preset only disables printing — copying, modifying, and form filling remain allowed. If you also want to prevent text copying, use the Read-Only preset which disables all permissions, or customize the individual permission toggles to match your exact requirements.
