Make PDF Read-Only

Lock down your PDF so recipients can view it but cannot print, copy text, modify content, or fill in forms. This preset disables all document permissions, creating a truly read-only file. You'll set a password that encrypts these restrictions. Ideal for distributing final reports, published documents, proprietary materials, and any PDF where you want to prevent unauthorized reproduction or modification.

FAQ

What does read-only protection prevent?
Read-only protection prevents four actions: printing the document, copying text or images, modifying the content, and filling in form fields. Recipients can view the document on screen but cannot extract or alter any content. This is enforced through PDF encryption standards.
Can someone bypass the read-only protection?
PDF permissions are enforced by compliant PDF readers like Adobe Acrobat. While some tools can remove permissions (with the owner password), the encryption makes casual copying and printing impossible for most users. For maximum security, also set a user password to require authentication before viewing.
Do I need to share the password with recipients?
No. PDF encryption uses two passwords: an owner password (which you set here) that controls permissions, and an optional user password for opening the file. The owner password is for administration only — recipients can open and view the document without any password. The restrictions are enforced automatically.
